Velvet is a kind of piled silk fabric. Its texture has two types of wrap: pile wrap and main wrap, and a kind of woof thread. Due to delicacy in its design and form, and softness in its texture, velvet is regarded as the peak of textile art. The most beautiful form of velvet weaving is embossed velvet in which the design protrude from the surface displaying themselves. Velvet was initially used to make clothes for the aristocrats, curtains and upholstery in palaces, and to make coverings for the holy Quran, and praying mats. Yazd and Kashan used to be among the major velvet weaving centers in Iran, and Kashan velvet used to enjoy universal reputation due to its variety in color, design and delicacy in texture.
